Other
Camps Of The
South
Plains Council
Scout Park Camp
This camp was held in one
of the smaller, central Lubbock, Texas city parks. We know it was used
for short term camping and activities but at this time aren't sure about
the long-term camping usage. None of us is aware of a patch being issued.
Steve Ross indicated dates of pre 1948-after 1951.
Camp Buffalo (Lake)
This is a present short term
camping area set aside at Buffalo Lakes, just outside Lubbock, Texas. None
of us are aware of patch being issued, nor any long-term camping.
Need Information on these camps
We are looking for any additional
information on the following Camps from South Plains Council in the 1950's.
We have been provided copies of the patches used at the camps but have
little information to go with them. We understand that the camps
were held in New Mexcio prior to the council's Tres Ritos Camp. If
you have any information please e-mail us at the address found on the home
page. Thanks go to Mike Briggs and the "Patch Group" of South Plains
Council who are searching for information which we have printed below.
The other members of the group are Doug Spradling, Jim Norton, Carl Hart
and Steve Holland (all of Lubbock), and Bob Black in Denver City.
We also want to thank Robert Frizzell for providing us with black and white
copies of the patches and got us started on this search in the first place!
Here are the fact as we
know them about the camps.
K. N. Clapp, One of the founders
of the Council, brought at least one Troop to Holy Ghost Campgrounds (perhaps
1957-1959) and to Horseshoe Meadow (perhaps in 1949-50) Neither camp had
a water source and Camp Tres Ritos was found and occupied in 1959.
There is a Scouter named
Carl Hart here in Lubbock who says he camped at Horseshoe Camp in 1949-50.

Holy Ghost Canyon Scout Camp
Thiscamp was held near Cowles,
New Mexico at the area of the present Holy Ghost Campground. This camp
area borders the present Pecos Wilderness. A camp was held here for sure
in 1957, and possibly also held here in 1958. |
Horse Thief Scout Camp
The camp was held near Cowles,
New Mexico at the area of the present Panchuela Campground. This camp area
borders the present Pecos Wilderness. A camp was held here for sure in
1957. |

Sange de Cristo Scout Camp
Almost everyone believes this
was a SPC camp, but no one seems to have any verification yet. We understand
this is listed in an older Camp Book, of which we are trying to find a
copy. We expect the camp would have been located in Northern New Mexico
or Southern Colorado, which is the location of the Sangre De Cristo mountain
range. We understand the camp patch book listed the years 1950 - 1952,
but are still waiting to acquire a copy to make a confirmation. Notes from
Steve Ross indicate 1950's for the date. |
Cima del Mundo Scout Camp
We have zero information on
the location, dates or even verification that this was a South Plains Council
camp. People seem to think this was a SPC camp. We understand that Steve
Ross has this listed in his booklet as a SPC camp, and would love to know
his source for information. |

Mustang Camp
As with the Cima Del Mundo patch,
we have zero information on the location, dates or even verification that
this was a South Plains Council camp. We understand that Steve Ross also
has this patch listed in his booklet as a SPC camp, with dates of 1959-1960.
Again, we would like to know his source. Our group found Eric Howell's
comment on the name possibly being related to the Denver City Mustangs
to be very interesting, but have not bought into the theory yet. We think
there is a Mustang Draw in the south part of the Council - could be a source
for the name. |
Camp Haynes
(Also referred to sometimes
as "Mammy Haynes") This camp is located near Silverton, Texas and is still
owned (jointly owned by BSA and GSA) and used by SPC for weekend troop
campouts. Our information thus far indicates that the camp was used as
a summer camp for only one year, 1949. Notes from Steve Ross indicate dates
of pre 1948 - after 1970, but we do not know his source. |

Specialized summer
aquatic camps have been held in the Council, and patches issued. We have
not researched and confirmed the dates yet. We think it may have
been in 1969. |
