The stories behind other
summer camps held in West Texas are rich in tradition and history.
These camps were held prior to Councils acquiring their own camp properties.
Summer camp was an event that every boy in Scouting looked forward to.
Most of the early camps were held for eight to ten days and were moved
to a different location each year. They were run more like army camps
than the camps that we know of today. They were held wherever the leaders
could find a place on which to camp for a week. You will note that
several different councils used the same camp ground such as the Baptist
Encampment in Christoval, Texas, or Camp Fawcett down near Barksdale,
Texas.
Once Councils were chartered and well organized they purchased or were given property to establish a permanent camp. Some of those camps have since been abandoned. We have grouped these various camps by Councils for your easy reference. |
